Museum Benteng Vredeburg + Indische

In the afternoon I headed to the Museum Benteng Vredeburg. It's a history museum which tells the story of Indonesia's road to independence. Yogyakarta, as the onetime capital, figures prominently in the narrative.

The story is presented through 40 or so dioramas spread across 3 rooms. The English translations on the information panels are fairly accurate. But the fun stuff, like the interactive screens and videos, are entirely in Indonesian. The diorama below describes the decision to move the capital of Indonesia to Jogja on 4 Jan 1946.

An entry ticket costs just Rp 2000 and the museum is conveniently located at the southern tip of Jl. Maliboro. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area. (It's also a couple hundred meters away from Sonobudoyo, which is mentioned in a previous post)

There's also a cafe in the museum called Indische Coffee:

Keep learning new words about coffee! This is kopi tubruk. That's a name for the method of preparing coffee which is popular in Jawa and Bali. It involves boiling the coarsely ground coffee beans with water (and possibly also sugar). This gives you a thick layer of sediment at the bottom of the cup.
